Health and wellbeing should be a priority for all of us but we are so busy being…. busy it’s usually the last thing on our minds until illness, pain and disease affects us.

Illness, pain and disease are the body’s natural way of telling us that something is wrong, and we need to change some aspect of our lifestyle.  This could be something physical like how we do things – we sit down all day at a desk for example and then wonder why we get back or neck problems.  Or perhaps more importantly it could be a reaction to the stress and anxiety of modern day work and home life.

“The biggest asset your organisation has is its people; the biggest asset they have is their health and wellbeing”

(Investors in People: Health and Wellbeing Good Practice Guide)

The UK Government Health and Safety Executive reported that during 2016 and 2017 there were 526,000 workers suffering from work related stress, depression and anxiety and in total, 12.5 million working days were lost.  This amounts to 1,610 people per 100,000 workers, human, health and social work activities scored higher than average rates of stress, depression or anxiety with public administration and defence in second place, education in third place and all industries following.

In 2016 – 2017 stress, depression and anxiety accounted for 40% of all work-related ill health cases and 49% of all working days lost to ill health!  Whilst stress is difficult to measure by its very nature often it’s not until we have physical symptoms that we realise we are experiencing stress or anxiety – these can include:

  • Numbness and tingling
  • Dizziness
  • Chest pain
  • Headaches
  • Neck tension
  • Stomach upset, nervous stomach
  • Pulsing in the ear
  • Burning skin
  • Fear of impending doom
  • Nausea
  • Shortness of breath
  • Electric shock feeling
  • Shooting pains in the face
  • Heart palpitations
  • Weakness in legs
  • Feeling like you are going crazy
  • Inability to rest
  • Sleep problems

Causes of stress, depression and anxiety can be to do with workloads, tight deadlines, too much work or too much pressure or responsibility, lack of managerial support, organisational changes at work, violence or role uncertainty.

Fortunately there are ways to learn to manage stress and the resulting anxiety and help your employees to sleep better, enjoy your leisure time and feel more energetic and focused at work.

The health and wellbeing workshops I provide not only guide your employees through therapy, they also teach them simple yet effective techniques to use whenever they feel they need to relax, de-stress and remove those unwanted feelings of anxiety.
